The number of supertall buildings completed in the Middle East in 2018 increased to 13 in 2018, compared to only nine last year, with the biggest part of them constructed in Dubai, according to the CTBUH.
Why Middle East developers are so passionate about constructing high buildings and breaking records in height, while Dubai has quite enough free land for developing?
According to data, provided by Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) Middle East, UAE, and Dubai in particular, are among global top cities by number of supertall towers constructed last year .
The Middle East, and most notably Dubai, became the hottest destination for architects looking to build 300 metre-plus high towers. The reason for this is obvious. Dubai has become the world’s brightest scene for showcasing different records, marvels and talents in many fields, of which real estate development is the provident. Everything highest, tallest, biggest and most impressive is gathered here, next to the world’s highest tower of Burj Khalifa. As a result, Middle East now has 23 of the 100 tallest buildings in the world, according to CTBUH data, second only to Asia (59 of the top 100) globally.
A annual report called 'Tall Building Year in Review' published last week by the USA analitical agency, also confirmed that 10 out of the 13 skyscrapers (200 metres plus) completed in the ME region this year were located in Dubai — up from just 3 skyscrapers last year. However, 6 of these buildings were part of one of two multitower projects — four in the Damac Towers by Paramount, and the other 2 — in the Emaar Properties' The Address Residence - Fountain Views.
"The fact that more than half of the completions in the region were actually represented by only two projects has skewed results somewhat from what otherwise would be considered an average year," the publication said.
Among other high buildings delivered in the Middle East region in 2018 there were a 205 metre-high Golden Tower constructed in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), and two skyscrapers in Kuwait City.
Globally, there were 143 building having 200 metres plus in height handed over in 2018, which is four fewer than last year's record of 147 completions.
The biggest part (88 of 143) were built in China, putting it considerably ahead of the United States with 13 completions and the UAE with the 10 Dubai completions.
